Brian Pollard is widely acclaimed as one of the most popular and successful naive painters in the South West of England. Much as he dislikes labels, Brian describes his highly individual work with an equally distinctive phrase: "decorative romantic". Reviewing one of Brian's many sell-out exhibitions at Plymouth's Barbican Gallery, the Western Morning News pointed out that although innumerable artists have tried to recreate naive styles, few actually succeed: "There is all the more to appreciate in the expertise and sheer brilliance of Brian Pollard". The late Arts critic Daniel Farson, who reviewed two of Brian's exhibitions for the Mail on Sunday, commented that Brian's work has "a cheerfulness so welcome ---- a universal appeal".

Although many of the pictures reflect a love of his home city of Plymouth and the surrounding harbours and seascapes, Brian's painting is universally appreciated - his animal imagery has been used for several successful Japanese calendars, and there is constant demand for the delightful prints, posters, cards and jigsaws produced from the coveted originals. Brian was recently commissioned by the National Trust and South Hams District Council to produce images for plaques along the Dart Valley Trail; these can be seen on the path between Greenway and Kingswear.

Daniel Farson remarked that the work is "unashamedly escapist". Brian did, in fact, begin painting as a self-prescribed antidote to the stresses and strains of his other career, medicine. He has recently retired from the inner-city practice where he worked as a family doctor for twenty-seven years.

Brian is actively involved in community projects and fund-raising. He is the proud recipient of the 'Pride of Plymouth Award' for his work with local charities and for inspiring children in the classrooms of Plymouth's primary schools.
